BRAIN TRAIN® VOLUME 2: VOCATIONAL READINESS

The 15 programs in this volume were designed to provide a bridge between cognitive rehabilitation and vocational training/placement. The programs represent cost-effective assessment and vocational training tools; they can provide information regarding general vocational readiness, the feasibility of specific vocational options, a user's ability to learn different types of job-related data or procedures and performance levels over trials to maximize a smooth transition to a job site. This type of pre-screening also reduces the likelihood of jeopardizing community placements by attempting to ensure that the individual has the work skills required to be successful. Programs include basic word and graphics processing, spreadsheet and data entry, inventory control, coded cash register, complex visual-spatial quality control, address comparisons, oscilloscope reading, resistor coding, and reading speed/comprehension. In addition to including field-specific vocational applications and through individually-tailored graduated challenges, Volume 2 can be used to evaluate and develop general work skills that apply regardless of the ultimate vocational goal. Volume 2 addresses ability to work for extended time periods, maintain task focus, switch tasks, use reference manuals and help screens, follow complex directions, and work rapidly and accurately.

PROGRAM DESCRIPTIONS

Assembly Line: Model shapes are displayed at the top of the screen with an identifying letter beneath each one. One of the displayed shapes is randomly selected as a target shape and begins moving across the bottom of the screen in the same orientation or rotated. Enter the letter of the shape which is exactly the same as the moving shape before it reaches the edge of the screen.

BT Draw: A basic graphics processing program which includes a separate manual describing features and their use. Three tutorials of graded difficulty are included. Pictures created by the program may be saved for later review.

BT Read: This program evaluates reading speed/comprehension. Passages are selected from a list of titles on the screen. Users may read at their own pace or at previously-established rates. Each passage is followed by multiple choice questions evaluating comprehension.

BT Word: An introductory word processing program including a help screen. The user must replicate a model document displayed on the upper part of the screen. User's entries appear on the lower part. Difficulty levels range from the program identifying errors as they occur to the user having to proofread the document to locate and correct errors.

Circuit Compare: Circuit board representations, each containing 4-20 sections, are displayed. The boards may have identical or different component sections. Task may range from simply indicating whether the boards are the same or different to locating differences and correcting the different component by replacing such with the correct section.

Data Entry: This program involves entering simple to complex alphanumeric data. Data to be entered is displayed at the top right corner of the screen.

Group Recall: This program requires learning and recalling groups of words or addresses. Numbered lists of words or addresses are displayed with time provided to study group contents. A randomly generated word or address is displayed. User must indicate the group to which it belongs.

Inventory: This database and inventory control program involves filling customer orders, adding new products to the current inventory, updating products in an existing database, and making determinations using reorder points.

Machine Tending: This task requires users to keep indicators on 2-6 gauges within a specified safety range. Simultaneous tracking may be required on a separate task involving identification of target codes as they pass beneath a designated code.

Mail Sort: This program requires analysis and rapid response to names and addresses; targets may be stationary or move across the screen.

McBrain Train: An automated cash register program that simulates the requirements of establishments that use coded product numbers and involves calculation of customer orders.

Resistor Code: This program involves calculating values and tolerance of resistors used in electronic circuits. User is required to determine color codes and/or numerical values. Help screen is available for reference.

Scope: This program simulates the reading and interpretation of data displayed on an oscilloscope screen. User must measure the amplitude, period, frequency, duty cycle and offset of the square waveform and calculate results based on dial settings. Procedure examples are accessible during the program as needed.

Shipping Clerk: This program involves determination of surface, next day and second day air shipping charges using zone and rate reference charts. Instructions may be reviewed as necessary via a help screen.

Spreadsheet: A simple spreadsheet program using up to 7 columns and 18 rows. Placement and entry errors are scored.
